(an ass), a Hivite who at the time of the entrance of Jacob in Palestine was prince of the land and city of Shechem (Genesis 33:19; 34:2, 4, 6, 8, 13, 18, 20, 24, 26). He is also the father of Shechem, who lay with Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, by force. He was killed with the rest of the people in the city of Shechem at the hands of Simeon and Levi, two of Dinah’s brothers, and the city of Shechem was looted by the sons of Jacob.
