Isaac digs several wells in the valley of Gerar, and the herdmen of the valley contest against him for the water in the wells. The herdmen “strive” with Isaac’s herdmen for two wells, which Isaac respectively calls Esek (strife) and Sitnah (opposition). Finally, Isaac digs another well which the herdmen of Gerar do not fight with him over, and he calls it Rehoboth (broad open places).
