Pharaoh, Magicians of
Bible References
There are several instances in the Bible in which the magicians of Pharaoh are mentioned. In the first, Pharaoh asks them to interpret his dreams about cows and grain, but they are unable to (Genesis 41:8, 24). Later, the magicians under a different Pharaoh, during Moses’ time, imitate many of the miracles and plagues the Lord shows to convince that Pharaoh to free the Israelites. For instance, they turn staves into snakes and water to blood (Exodus 7:11, 22). But when God makes the dust of the land become lice, the magicians are unable to replicate the plague and testify that the plague is of God (Exodus 8:18-19). Later, when the Egyptians are afflicted with boils, we read, “And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians” (Exodus 9:11).
