Aaron, Sons of
Bible References
Initially the term “sons of Aaron” refers specifically to Aaron’s literal sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar (Exodus 28:1). However, as it is used in the commandments the Lord gives Moses regarding priestly duties like sacrifice (see Exodus 29-30, 40 and Leviticus for notable examples) , the phrase is often used to refer more generally to all Aaron’s descendants who were priests among the children of Israel in the time of the Exodus. In other words, the commandments, the priestly ceremonies and duties were not given exclusively to Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, but to everyone who was a priest in Israel. Thus “sons of Aaron” can in many cases simply be read to mean “priest.” See also Israel, Priests of
