Biblical Chronology

Summary

The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles run largely parallel to the books of Samuel and Kings, but still contain unique details and stories not found in the earlier history. It is likely that Chronicles was written following the Babylonian Exile and the return to Jerusalem. Four main narratives are followed in the books of Chronicles, two of which are found in 1 Chronicles: (1) a genealogy and history of Israel from Adam to the Babylonian Exile (1 Chronicles 1–9) and (2) the reign of King David (1 Chronicles 10–29). In the Chronicler’s account of David’s reign, David is presented in a positive light and a type for the future Messianic King.
