Heavenly messengers appear throughout the bible, often being referred to as “angel of the Lord,” “angel of God,” or simply “angels.” “Angel of the Lord” may also refer specifically to the Lord himself being made manifest to individuals in the Bible, as the visitation of the Angel of the Lord is often intermixed with dialogue attributed to the Lord himself (see, for example, Genesis 16:13 and Exodus 3:2, 4-6)
