Israel, Officers of the Children of
People whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had put in authority over the rest of the children of Israel, presumably to officiate in and organize the work Pharaoh was making them do. The taskmasters beat them when, despite not being given straw to make bricks, the children of Israel do not fulfill their regular quota. Subsequently, they bring the issue to Moses and Aaron, blaming them for their predicament.
