Kohathites
Bible References
Descendants of Kohath. The Kohathites consisted of several clans, including the Amramites, Izeharites, Hebronites, and Uzzielites (Numbers 3:27). In the time of the exodus the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle (Numberes 3:29) and were responsible for transporting the most holy things (Numbers 4:4; 7:9; 10:21), including the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used with them, and the curtain of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:31). Aaron and his sons would cover the objects and assign each object to specific Kohathites to carry, and the Kohathites would carry them from place to place when the Israelites moved, but they were not allowed to touch or see the objects themselves or they would die (Numbers 4:15, 19-20). Kohathite men from thirty to fifty years old who were able were called to serve in the tabernacle in this way (Numbers 4:2-3, 34-37).
