Moab
Bible References
A country and region bordered on the north by the river Arnon (Numbers 21:13) and on the west by the Dead Sea. During conquest between Moab and its neighbor countries, many cities on, near, or inside its border changed hands. Moab is the home country of Ruth, daughter-in-law of Naomi. Israel triumphs over Moab and its leaders in war multiple times throughout the Old Testament (Joshua 24:9-10; Judges 3:12-30; 2 Samuel 8:2; 2 Kings 3; 1 Chronicles 18:2; 2 Chronicles 20). In many places in scripture the Lord foretells judgment, destruction and captivity for Moab, perhaps most notably in Isaiah 15 and Jeremiah 48. The region is in Isaiah’s time noted for its pride and wrath (Isaiah 16:6). In response to the “reproach of Moab,” the Lord prophesies through Zephaniah, “surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Abbon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation.” (Zephaniah 2:8-9)
