Summary

God commands Jacob to go to Beth-el and to build an altar there. Jacob takes his family to Beth-el, and as they journey, they are protected by God. When they arrive in Beth-el, Jacob builds the altar and calls the place El-Beth-el. God appears to Jacob and blesses him. God calls Jacob Israel. God covenants with Jacob that the blessing given to Abraham and Isaac will be carried on through Jacob and his posterity as well. Rachel dies in Ephrath on their journey back to the land of Canaan, after giving birth to Benjamin. Reuben lays with one of his fathers concubines. Jacob meets Issac his father in the land of Mamre, and Isaac dies.
